Let’s Talk About Spice

Hi Friends and Family,

This month’s topic is all about spice.  Spice. The Spice-ometer that oftentimes is displayed as red chilly peppers or flames beside book reviews. I’ve even seen kiss marks, which is adorable.

You may be wondering: why is this blog about spice? My first published work—Falling for Lemon Snowballs—is a sweet, cozy, and absolutely fulfilling Christmas Cookie romcom novella with all the Hallmark-movie Christmas feels (don’t forget to grab your copy for Christmas in July—just $2.99!). It’s sweet and scrumptious just like lemon snowball cookies!

The Stars of Scotland, debuting in 2024, is a contemporary romance. The Romance Writer’s of America defines contemporary romance as ‘Romance novels that are set from 1950 to the present that focus primarily on the romantic relationship.’ When I told my neighbor this fact after she asked me when my next sweet romance is available for purchase (thank you, btw!), I waited for her reaction.

Her hazel eyes grew wide under her floppy walking hat. “So, does your book include…those scenes?”

They do include some of those scenes—sexy and spicy scenes (two chili peppers rating), but they’re tasteful and purposeful. My publisher, The Wild Rose Press, categorized The Stars of Scotland as a book in their champagne line—books that are sensual to erotic. And this is how I’m describing the spice level.

Champagne level spice is a sophisticated, yet sensual level that weaves emotion and passion, and leaves the reader with a satisfying feeling after reading. It’s not abrasive or crass, but vibrant like the stars.

It’s also passionate.

Why did I include these scenes?

My main character, Brielle, is a single mom. After a devastating divorce, she lost confidence and a part of herself, and as a result, her self-worth diminished. Confidence, especially confidence in the bedroom is difficult, especially for someone with a C-section scar and heart-wrenching memories of her former husband cheating on her. These scenes bring in another layer of trust and growth in her relationship with Bryce—the swoony, kilt-clad love interest—and deepen their relationship. The spicy scenes also highlight passion and that Brie is worthy of passion and love.

This series and book was also inspired by Outlander. If you’ve read the books and seen the Starz adaptation, you’re familiar with the love scenes. That’s right—they’re sexy, steamy, and did I mention sexy? Lol.

If contemporary romance is one of your favorite genres, then I hope you’ll enjoy every facet of The Stars of Scotland, including these beautiful scenes. Stay tuned for more updates and the cover reveal.

Until next time, I wish you lots of great books and a wonderful July!
